Plavákový spínač sa využíva v spojení s ponornými kalovými alebo ponornými tlakovými čerpadlami. Spínač automaticky zapína alebo vypína čerpadlo v závislosti od stavu hladiny vody. Zmenou polohy závažia na prívodnom kábli je možné regulovať výšku hladiny, pri ktorej má plavákový spínač zapnúť alebo vypnúť čerpadlo. Plavákový spínač je vodotesný.
